"Then, I thought that nudity is natural and I was more comfortable. "They live vicariously through me, then they think, 'maybe I could.,' " he said. " When working on the shoots, he said that men are first surprised that he could model nude, because they say they couldn't. "There's more of a stigma for women doing it than men, though. "A number of actors have done nudity both in film and in magazines," he added. I wouldn't bungee jump or jump out of a plane, though. "I don't consider myself a thrill-seeker, but this is the riskiest thing I've done. I don't think of myself that way and when I do it makes me laugh. When asked how it felt to be an object of fantasy, he smiled.

"I got to communicate with readers across the U.S.," he said. Each centerfold is given a 900 telephone number, where he leaves a message and can receive messages from fans. He gets fan mail, both written and spoken. His duties include representing the magazine on talk shows and participating in a contest to win a date with him. He knew he was in the running because he'd been a centerfold, but he was surprised when the editor called him and said he'd won. " LATER in the year, Playgirl ran the contest for the Man of the Year, and voting was done by phone and letter.
She told me I owed it to the women of America to use the pictures. "I showed them to my girlfriend, who's from Blackwell. "After I saw them I thought they were in good taste," he said. The magazine's photographer told Shafer that if he didn't like the pictures, the magazine wouldn't use them. "I sent my pictures in two years ago and they called me six months later. " Prior to being named the Man of the Year, Shafer was the 1990 Man for the Holidays centerfold for the magazine.
The need for an actor or performer to get publicity has reached new heights, Shafer said about being a magazine centerfold. He's also a writer, model, actor and would-be director in Los Angeles.
